Come by the Chamber of Commerce's 4th Annual Health & Wellness Fair on Sunday, April 29 from 11am - 3pm to see Rotary's traveling Iron Lung exhibit. See an actual iron lung, a mechanical breathing apparatus which helped keep polio victims alive. People using an iron lung would be placed in a cylindrical steel drum, with head and neck exposed, forming an air-tight compartment from the neck down. The iron lung controlled air pressure within the drum, impacting the lungs and the airflow.
The Iron Lung exhibit is an incredible reminder of what life could be like with Polio - and without Rotary.
The Health Fair is organized by our own Rotarian Mary Ann Bender, through her volunteer work with the Oak Park - River Forest Chamber of Commerce. The Fair is held at the West Cook YMCA, under the leadership of Rotarian Phillip Jimenez.
